A Grandmother–Grandson Expedition Across Alaska (and Beyond)
Featuring:Gannon — The Youth Burger Whisperer
Deb — The Official Narrator, Driver, and Halibut-Salad Enthusiast
Follow along as Gannon renders verdicts that could shake the culinary world…
or at least a few fry baskets. Season One Continues: The Alaska Trials
Sadly: Farewell to Alaska

The Burger That Tried… and Failed
Yesterday was our last full day in Alaska.
Bright sun.
Blue sky.
Crunchy snow.
And Gannon — in shorts, naturally — standing in front of a sign boldly proclaiming:
“Voted One of Alaska’s BEST Burgers.”
This always amuses me.
Alaska is full of confidence.
Hamburger confidence especially.
We stepped inside with the swagger of two seasoned critics.
At this point, burger joints across Alaska know us.
Some flinch.
Some duck.
Some silently pray.
Because when Gannon shows up?
It’s Judgement Day.
And as always,
the kid delivered.
The Verdict
Gannon took a bite, nodded thoughtfully, and declared:
“Good… but not better.”
That’s polite Gannon language for:
“Nice try, but no crown for you.”
And so the rankings remain:
1 — Miller’s Market (Houston, AK)
2 — Arctic Roadrunner (Anchorage)
3 — Former Number Three (disgraced due to an unexpected crunchy surprise found mid-bite) He quietly refused to finish it
.I quietly mourned the halibut salad.
End of story.
The Farewell Burger That Almost Was
This final contender wanted the title.
It tried.
It fought valiantly.
It stood tall under the bright Alaska sun.
But Gannon — keeper of the sacred burger standards — gave the final, irreversible ruling:
“NOPE.”
And that was that.
But Wait…
The Quest Continues
Just when you thought the season was closing…
We now have:
✈️ A 2-hour layover in Minneapolis and
✈️ A 2-hour layover in Atlanta
And Gannon has already informed me that airport burgers count.
They are part of the scientific process.
The kid is committed to the integrity of the Quest.
So stay tuned.
Alaska may be behind us for now,
but the Hamburger Journey?
Oh, it’s very much alive.
This is merely
The Farewell to Alaska Chapter of a Quest
that continues to reveal legends, failures, and future contenders.
And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Our Scientific Ranking (So Far)
#1 — Miller’s Market (Houston, AK)
